Saturday 19 January 2008 - Pardoo Station - Broome 466 kms

Are we there yet?

-17 °C

We departed Pardoo Station early and debated whether to breakfast at Pardoo Roadhouse (30 kms away) or at Sandfire Roadhouse (about 100 kms away). We decided to check out Pardoo first and were dissappointed to find that their advertised "famous sausage rolls" hadn't been cooked yet. We settled for a cup of take away coffee (you guessed it) and try our luck at Sandfire.

It turned out that the appropriately named Roadhouse was consumed by fire a few months back and now operated out of a donger. Understandably the food situation was somewhat limited with a choice of two sandwiches and the usual pies and sausage rolls. They expect to have a new roadhouse in April. We settled for the sandwiches and headed off to Broome.

It's a pretty boring run up to Broome from Hedland but we did cast our minds back to a memorable time when we passed the turnoff to Barn Hill Station. Barn Hill is a working cattle station approximately 100 kms south of Broome, which also operates as a caravan park. Very private sites in a bush camp setting and an amazing 2 rink bowling green set up on the cliffs above the beach. Easy drive down onto the beach and great fishing.

On to Broome! Around 4 kms before the town centre we reach Broome Oasis B & B where we have arranged to park the "big rig" and live for the next little while. The owner showed us a site in a paddock next to the B & B so we manouvered into a good spot and set up.
